Norman City Council: Putting the Public Back in Public Service
Michael Nash has served two separate terms on the Norman City Council, first sworn in as Ward 5 Councilmember in September 2020 and again in July 2023, establishing a long, public record of transparency and resident-focused leadership. During his first term, Nash pushed to slow major decisions until the public could be heard, changed city policy so storm-debris pickup did not exclude half of Ward 5, secured long-requested traffic safety upgrades, and supported targeted public safety and small-business relief funding while opposing government overreach. Between council terms, he served as president of Pike Off OTA, leading a grassroots effort to protect more than 600 homes from an inappropriate turnpike project through public education, legislative engagement, and bill advocacy, continuing the same transparency-first approach outside elected office.
Since re-election and returning to Council, Nash has delivered major, measurable accomplishments. He exposed a hidden $60 million giveaway in the YFAC lease and secured a permanent public-use guarantee, revealed misleading bond packages, opposed the arena proposal, and drafted ordinances to force public votes on large TIFs. He authored watershed and floodplain protections, opposed development threatening Dave Blue Creek, revealed concealed turnpike plans through internal communications, and advanced ordinances requiring NEPA-equivalent environmental studies for large projects. His record also includes practical wins: $180,000 for animal-welfare improvements, speeding up renovation and reopening of Lakeview Falls Park, protection for family farms, retention of the city’s internal auditor who uncovered inappropriate spending, and fixes to simple problems inconveniencing ordinary residents like Big Trash Day timing. Together, this record demonstrates sustained, public, and principled leadership, focused on accountability, environmental stewardship, fiscal responsibility, and government that answers to the people of Cleveland County.
